Eye Exams

Generational Eye Care for a Lifetime

Regardless of how old or young you are, it is important to make regular eye exams part of your overall approach to living a healthy life.

Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas offers comprehensive eye exams adapted to your unique circumstances and takes into consideration all the concerns associated with the season of life you are in.

Most experts agree that you should have a comprehensive vision exam (including dilation) every one to two years, depending on age, health, risk factors and whether you currently wear corrective lenses.

Q: What’s the difference between a vision screening and a comprehensive eye exam?
A: A vision screening is a quick test used to identify possible vision issues. Screenings are limited in their scope and might be performed by a school nurse or at a well-child check up; even at the DMV! A vision screening cannot determine if you are suffering from an eye disorder and is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam.

What Does a Comprehensive Eye Exam at Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas Include?

We do so much more than determine your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses at Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas. At your personalized comprehensive eye exam, we will also check your eyes for any eye disease, assess how your eyes work together and even evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health.

At our Irving office, dilation of your pupils is recommended for a comprehensive exam. It may be necessary for you to have a driver if your eyes are going to be dilated.

Tests will range from simple, like having you read an eye chart, to complex, such as using a high-powered lens to examine the health of the tissues inside of your eyes.

Adult Eye Exams

Adult Eye ExamsFor a lifetime of healthy vision, the American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends adults have a comprehensive eye exam every two years for adults who are ages 18 to 60 and annual exams for adults aged 61 and older. Adults with certain risk factors should have eye exams more frequently.

Vision-related risk factors for adults include:

  • Diabetes or high blood pressure
  • A family history of eye disease (macular degeneration, glaucoma)
  • Previous eye injuries or eye surgery
  • A visually demanding occupation or one that may pose hazards to the eyes

Children’s Eye Exams

Children's Eye ExamsYou want your kiddos to have every opportunity to succeed in life, right? We all want that for our children and grandchildren.

Well, for children, regular eye exams are as important as regular medical check-ups. With years of school ahead of them, where much of the information they receive will be visual in nature, it is important that children be able to see well in order to be ready to learn.

According to the American Optometric Association, children should have their first eye exam at 6 months of age, again at age 3 and another exam at the start of school. Children without risk factors should then continue to have their eyes examined every two years until age 18. Children with risk factors (including premature birth, developmental delays and a family history of eye disease) should see an optometrist more frequently.
