Eyes are as unique as the people who have them. Probably more so. As unique as your fingerprint. So it makes sense that different people (and their eyes) will experience different vision issues.
Here, we will focus on a few of the most common causes of impaired vision and the treatment options available at Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas.
Astigmatism
When the eye has a football-like shape, it causes the cornea to have an irregular or uneven curvature. As a result, light is not focused evenly on the retina. This vision issue is called astigmatism. Many people don’t realize that almost everyone has at least some level of astigmatism and it is believed to be a hereditary condition.
For most people, astigmatism will result in slightly impaired vision. Thankfully, it can easily be corrected with glasses or contacts. LASIK can also correct astigmatism and our expert optometric team at Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas can help you determine which treatment is best for you.
Hyperopia (farsightedness)
Also called farsightedness, hyperopia results in you being able to see well at a distance but being unable to see as well up close. The two most common causes of farsightedness are corneas that are not curved enough or eyeballs that are a bit too short when measured from front to back. Both issues will cause light to converge behind the retina, leading to vision problems.
At Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas, we have a number of options to correct farsightedness. For milder cases, most people choose to go with glasses or contacts. If you have moderate to severe hyperopia, you may be a candidate for LASIK. Our expert optometric team at Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas is here and ready to help you determine which course of treatment is best for you.

Myopia (nearsightedness)
It makes it easy if you think of nearsightedness as the opposite of farsightedness. Myopia is a vision condition where you can see well up close, but things become blurry at a distance.
Nearsightedness occurs when light entering the cornea focuses in front of the retina instead of on the retina. This happens because the distance between the front and back of the eye is too long. This results in the ability to see near objects clearly while objects in the distance may appear blurry. Myopia can be corrected at Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas with corrective lenses (glasses or contacts). LASIK vision correction is also a popular treatment option for correcting myopia.
Presbyopia
As we begin to age, the lenses in our eyes lose their flexibility, which can make it difficult to focus on nearby items such as books and computer screens. That’s why it’s common to see people in their 40s and 50s holding the menu or their phone at arm’s length and squinting to see it.
This vision condition is called presbyopia (also affectionately known as Over-40 Vision). It does not generally affect seeing at a distance and is a perfectly natural part of aging.
Unfortunately, Over-40 Vision cannot be prevented with lifestyle changes, diet or visual habits. Luckily, it is quite treatable with options such as contact lenses, bifocals, trifocals, monovision therapy, progressive eyeglasses, and single-vision reading glasses.
Got the Over-40 Vision blues? No worries. We can help.
