If you are one of the estimated 40 million Americans who wear contact lenses, you are likely somewhat familiar with the importance of proper care and cleaning of your contact lenses. You know you risk infection if you fail to wear, clean, disinfect and store your contact lenses as directed by your eye care provider. Even non-sight threatening infections or inflammation can be annoying, painful and disrupt your day-to-day life. Good hygiene, proper contact lens care and regular follow-up care with your eye doctor are all essential to keeping your eyes healthy for a lifetime.
The third week of August has been designated as National Contact Lens Health Week. At Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas, we love to help our patients achieve their best personal vision, whether they choose glasses or contact lenses or even laser vision correction surgery.
Contact lenses are more popular today than ever before and Cargo Eye Care is your go-to source for all things contact lenses! Contact lenses are a fantastic choice for anyone who requires vision correction but does not want to wear glasses, at least on a full-time basis, and does not want to have vision-correcting surgery such as LASIK.
If you are someone who has chosen contact lenses, let’s talk more about caring for your eyes and your contacts so you can enjoy healthy vision for a lifetime.
Guidelines for Healthy Contact Lens Wear and Care
You may be familiar with many of the basic contact lens hygiene guidelines but our list, endorsed by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, is more comprehensive and goes beyond the basic daily care.
DO:
- Wash your hands with soap and water, and dry them well with a clean cloth before touching your contact lenses. Every single time. No exceptions!
- Avoid showering in your contact lenses, and remove them before using a hot tub or swimming.
- Replace your contact lens case at least once every three months. Rub and rinse your contact lens case with contact lens solution (not water!) and empty and dry with a clean tissue paper. Store upside down with the caps off after each use.
- Give your eyes a rest. Your cornea, the transparent tissue covering each eye, can get deprived of oxygen from being covered up all day by a contact lens.
- Sterilize the night before planned wear, if you wear contact lenses sporadically. Disinfecting solutions lose their efficacy over time, leading to microbial overgrowth in the case and on the lens.
DON’T:
- Sleep in your contact lenses, unless prescribed by your eye doctor.
- “Top off” contact lens disinfecting solution. Use fresh solution each time you remove your contacts – don’t mix fresh solution with old or used solution.
- Over-wear your contact lenses. Over-wearing contact lenses can lead to problems such as eye inflammation and lipid deposits in the cornea, which can affect vision. Over-wearing can also increase the risk of infection.
- Use lenses that have not been approved by the FDA.
Daily Disposable Lenses
If all of the above sounds like a lot of work, you may want to consider daily disposable contact lenses. Disposable contacts offer many benefits vs. traditional extended-wear contacts – you get a fresh, clean pair every day, so you save on the hassle and expense of a daily cleaning regimen. Daily disposable lenses have also been associated with a lower risk of eye infections when compared to extended-wear contacts. Cargo Eye Care carries the most trusted brands of daily contact lenses, including Bausch+Lomb, Alcon, Johnson & Johnson and Coopervision.
