Did you know that eye injuries are one of the leading causes of blindness and partial blindness in children in the US? The vast majority of these injuries happen while playing sports. The good news is that wearing the right protective eyewear can prevent 9 out of 10 sports-related eye injuries.
At Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas, we care about the eye health of every patient we serve. It is a joy to help athletes, whether they are students or adult weekend warriors, to find protective eyewear that protects their sight while allowing them to comfortably focus on their game.
What is Protective Eyewear?
Protective eyewear can be defined as eyewear made of ultra-strong polycarbonate, a type of plastic that’s extremely impact resistant. It also protects eyes from ultraviolet (UV) rays. Types of protective eyewear for sports include safety goggles, face guards and special eyewear designed for specific sports.
Regular eyeglasses, sunglasses and contact lenses don’t offer protection from eye injuries — but most protective eyewear can be made to match glasses or contacts prescriptions. Athletes can also wear safety goggles over their regular glasses or contacts.
Some sports have a higher risk of eye injury than others. Sports like baseball, softball, basketball and hockey come with a higher risk of eye injury than others like swimming, cycling, track and field, and gymnastics.

Spring Update for Allergy and Dry Eye Sufferers
It has begun in North Texas. As the trees bud and the flowers bloom, so do the itchy, watery, red and irritated eyes. Hello, spring and hello to you, too, seasonal allergies.
But before you head to the store to buy over-the-counter eye drops (that really only mask the problem and can do more harm than good), we’d like to let you know about some eye drops that are specially formulated to treat even the most annoying dry eye and allergy symptoms. And, the best part? They work!
Say Hello to Hylo. OPTASE® HYLO® Relief Dry Eye Drops are a convenient option for contact lens wearers, and pre/post surgery patients, as recommended by Drs. Cargo and Patel. The special formulation of long lasting Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin provides comfort from mild to moderate dry eye symptoms. Our online optical shop also carries several other eye drop formulations that offer relief for everything from allergy eyes to chronic dry eye.
