North Texas summer is in full swing and, as expected, it’s sunny and hot! As July is designated as UV Safety Awareness Month, we want to remind our amazing patient family about the importance of protecting their eyes from harmful UV rays.

UV Safety Awareness Could Save Your Sight

July is the hottest, sunniest month of the year in North Texas, making it the most important time to be mindful of the ways you can protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. “Many studies show that long-term exposure to bright sunlight may increase the risk of cataracts and growths on the eye, including cancer,” said Dr. Jonathan Cargo, founder of Cargo Eye Care. “UV rays reflected off sand and water can cause your eyes to experience sunburn.”

Cool Shades for a Hot Summer

The best way to shield your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays is with 100% UV-blocking sunglasses and broad-brimmed hats. We advise our patients to invest in sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B radiation for the greatest eye protection.

With such a wide variety of lens and frame options on the market, our optical experts make it simple to customize your sunglasses so that they meet your visual, protection, performance, comfort and style needs.

A quality pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is present even on cloudy days. Our selection of high-quality sunwear provides 100 percent UV protection and can significantly reduce the risk of vision problems caused by sunlight such as cataracts and retinal damage.

Glare makes it difficult to see objects clearly by washing out colors and details. Looking at a scene with polarized lenses, which can be placed in your sunglasses, you’ll notice the colors are deeper, richer and bolder, and details are clearer and more distinct. Polarized lenses also help reduce squinting, which, in turn, reduces eye fatigue, tension and eyestrain.

A few of our most popular sunglasses brands include:

  • Ray-Ban
  • Maui Jim
  • Oakley
  • Carolina Hererra

Our experienced optical team will help you find the perfect fit for your unique lifestyle and style preferences. We can help you narrow down the choices so you can find the look, fit and functionality you want – so that you are not only seeing your best, but looking your best, too! Welcome Dr. Savani

Another exciting July update is the arrival of our new optometrist. Dr. Saaleha Savani joins the Cargo Eye Care team this month, bringing with her a passion for personalized eye care and a strong foundation in specialty lenses and myopia management

Her journey began years earlier as an optical technician, where she first discovered her love for helping patients achieve their best possible vision. “I believe the best patient care starts with listening,” Dr. Savani said. “At Cargo Eye Care, I found a team that truly takes the time to understand each patient, build genuine connections and deliver exceptional care.”

Dr. Savani holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Texas A&M University, and recently completed her graduate studies at the University of Houston College of Optometry. During her time in optometry school, she completed her externship rotations at Cedar Springs Community Clinic in Dallas, Texas and Diagnostic Eye Center in Houston, Texas. During her formal training, Dr. Savani gained a tremendous amount of experience in pediatric care, specialty lens fittings, myopia management, and disease management. She has an extended scope license that allows her to prescribe oral medications and well as manage and treat glaucoma. Outside of the clinic, Dr. Savani enjoys reading, dancing, singing and spending time with friends and family.
