Dr. Saaleha Savani joined the Cargo Eye Care team earlier this summer, bringing with her a passion for personalized eye care and a strong foundation in specialty lenses and myopia management. We are delighted to have her on the team!
Dr. Savani earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Texas A&M University, and went on to complete her graduate studies at the University of Houston College of Optometry.
There, she completed her externship rotations at Cedar Springs Community Clinic in Dallas, Texas and Diagnostic Eye Center in Houston, Texas.
Throughout her education and training, Dr. Savani gained tremendous experience in pediatric care, specialty lens fittings, myopia management and disease management. She has an extended scope license that allows her to prescribe oral medications and well as manage and treat glaucoma.
Dr. Savani recently sat down and shared a little more about herself and the journey that led her to Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas. Please enjoy getting to know Dr. Savani!
Can you share about how you ended up choosing optometry as a profession?
My parents are Indian and both work in industries that serve people. My mom is a social worker and my dad is a nursing home administrator. Growing up, I always knew I wanted to do something that impacted people’s lives in a positive way. I was always really interested in science, so I knew I wanted to do something in medicine. The beautiful thing about optometry and eye care is that it is so rewarding. I see patients who are struggling with their vision and poor vision impacts quality of life in a major way. So, when I can examine their eyes and offer a solution that improves their sight, it also improves their lives in a profound way. It’s a beautiful process.
Can you share a little about your approach to patient care?
First and foremost, excellent patient care starts with good listening. When the patient comes in, it is because they’re having a problem. It could be a problem with their vision but it might be other symptoms like eye irritation or headaches. As a provider, I can’t treat someone and just jump into an exam if I don’t listen to them first to understand their complaint.
You’ve expressed a special interest in pediatric vision challenges. Do you have a secret for engaging with kids who might be scared or worried about seeing a doctor and how do you put them at ease?
With our younger patients, I think it’s really important to try to connect with them at their level. I can remember being terrified going to the dentist when I was little and a lot of children do have these fears around going to the doctor. So, having an awareness about any potential fear or discomfort they might be feeling and then talking to them as an equal, someone that you’re just trying to be comfortable to be friends with, is important. When you can do that well, most children will relax and open up because they know your intentions are good. It takes patience but is well worth the investment of time.
What do you love about being on the team at Cargo Eye Care?
One of my biggest passions in terms of optometry is myopia management, especially in children. It is one of the only specialties that’s preventative care rather than palliative or curative care. During my training, I became really passionate about it because if you can prevent the eye from deteriorating earlier, then you can prevent a lot of diseases and prevent a lot of blindness. And so I was on the hunt for someone who was just as passionate as I was and who really cared about children and impacting people’s lives. Dr. Cargo and I just clicked. We share similar values and I love the culture here.
Tell us a little about your life outside of work.
I’m a huge film geek. I just love watching movies and analyzing them. I’m also a dancer. I danced all throughout high school, was on the dance team in college and also in an Indian dance group, which is something I still do in my spare time. I love music and enjoy singing. I’m also a big reader and enjoy spending time with family and friends.
