January is Glaucoma Awareness Month
Happy New Year from all of us at Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas! As we step into 2026, many of us are thinking about fresh starts, healthier habits, and setting priorities that matter. One of the most important ways you can protect your long-term health this year is by taking care of your eyes—and January’s Glaucoma Awareness Month is the perfect reminder.
Our mission has been the same since we opened our doors in 2002: give every patient the knowledge, technology, and high-quality care needed to protect their vision for life. Your vision is our passion!
The “Silent Thief of Sight”
More than 3 million Americans are living with glaucoma, and experts believe half don’t know it. That’s because the most common form—primary open-angle glaucoma—usually begins with no noticeable symptoms. People can lose up to 40% of their vision before realizing something is wrong.
By 2030, the number of Americans with glaucoma is expected to rise to 4.2 million. The danger isn’t just the disease—it’s how quietly it progresses.
What Causes Glaucoma?
Glaucoma occurs when fluid inside the eye doesn’t drain properly, causing increased pressure that damages the optic nerve. Once that nerve tissue is lost, the vision loss is permanent.
Glaucoma can appear at any age—even in children—and early detection is the only way to protect your sight. That’s why every annual comprehensive eye exam at Cargo Eye Care includes a glaucoma screening, and why we perform in-depth evaluations when needed.
How Is Glaucoma Treated?
There’s no cure for glaucoma, but modern treatment options can slow or stop progression when detected early. Treatment focuses on lowering intraocular pressure through:
- Medicated eye drops help reduce fluid production or improve drainage, but they must be taken consistently.
- Laser procedures can improve fluid outflow and can reduce or eliminate the need for drops.
- Surgical options are available for advanced cases or when other treatments aren’t enough.
Both our providers, Dr. Jonathan Cargo and Dr. Saaleha Savani, hold extended scope licenses for the management and treatment of glaucoma. Together, we can tailor a plan based on the type and severity of your glaucoma.
Are You at Risk?
Anyone can develop glaucoma, but risk increases if you:
- Are 60+ (or 40+ for African American or Hispanic individuals)
- Have a family history of glaucoma
- Have diabetes, high blood pressure, migraines, or sickle cell anemia
- Have thin corneas
- Have experienced eye injuries or previous eye surgery
- Are extremely nearsighted or farsighted
- Use long-term corticosteroid medications, especially eye drops
Being aware of your risks—and staying consistent with yearly exams—is your best defense.
