What’s the scariest thing you can think of this Halloween? For us, it’s not the ghosts, goblins and skeletons that might ring our doorbells looking for candy, it’s the potential eye injuries our patients could sustain due to costumes and props, unsafe colored contact lenses and Halloween makeup malfunctions. Now that’s scary!

October is Halloween Safety Month so we would like to take the opportunity to go over a few safety tips that will help protect your eyes and your vision for a lifetime.

  • Use Care with Makeup. Many Halloween costumes include eye makeup and it’s always a good idea to be careful when applying cosmetics around the eyes. Metallic pigments, glitter and color additives can cause irritation to the eyes. And whether it is for a Halloween costume or not, you should avoid using makeup inside the lash line.
  • Use Care with Props. A wizard wand or a pirate sword can be a great addition to your Halloween costume but it goes without saying that you should use care when wielding even toy weapons and pointy props as they can present a hazard to the eyes.
  • Use Care with Contact Lenses. Specialty contact lenses can take your Halloween look from good to great by changing eye color or the appearance of your pupils. Although these costume lenses may not alter your vision, contact lenses are medical devices that require a prescription from an eye doctor. In fact, it is illegal for retailers to sell contact lenses without a prescription. Poorly fit or improperly cleaned contact lenses can cause eye infections that can lead to damage to the eye or vision.

Pediatric Eye Care for the Littlest Monsters

Myopia (nearsightedness) is on the rise in children, and the number of American children dealing with this vision condition has increased dramatically in recent decades. Experts agree that although there is a genetic factor, much of the increase can be attributed to excessive screen time, near activity (tablets and smartphones) and lack of exposure to sunlight.

At Cargo Eye Care, we are proud to offer a pediatric myopia management program for school-aged children with myopia. Our expert team can monitor and manage the progression of this vision-stealing condition as your child grows. Learn more here
