Protect Your Eyes When Playing Sports

According to Prevent Blindness America, around 40,000 Americans seek medical treatment for sports-related eye injuries each year. Thankfully, almost all of these injuries can be prevented with proper attention given to eye safety. Regardless of the sport or the age of the athlete, it is important to protect your eyes!

At Cargo Eye Care, we care about you and your family. And we are here for you if you or someone you love sustains an eye injury for any reason. Since April is Sports Eye Safety Month and also Kids Eye Safety Month, we’d like to share some tips on ways to keep your eyes (or your child’s eyes) safe while participating in sports of any kind.

  • Wear proper safety goggles (lensed polycarbonate protectors) for racquet sports like tennis, racketball and the wildly popular pickleball. This goes for basketball, too. In order to make sure your eyes are protected, it is important that any eye guard or sports protective eyewear are labeled as ASTM F803 approved. This eyewear is performance tested to give you the highest levels of protection. Not sure what all that means? We can help!
  • Use batting helmets with polycarbonate face shields for youth baseball.
  • Use helmets and face shields approved by the U.S. Amateur Hockey Association when playing hockey.

Regular Glasses Do Not Provide Enough Protection for Sports

The best thing you can do to protect your eyes in any sporting situation is to invest in protective eyewear. The investment is worth it when you consider the potential costs of treatment or even surgery that can result from a mishap. You want to make sure that your eyewear fits snugly and comfortably and that it meets the standards of the American Society of Testing Materials

Have an athlete living in your home? We can make sure they’re seeing clearly and staying safe on the court or field. Shop our large collection of sports sunglasses or prescription sports goggles. Or perhaps you have an older child who may be ready for contact lenses. We have occasional-wear contacts options that can help him or her ease into the responsibility of proper contact lens use.

You don’t need to be hit with a ball in order to have an eye injury while playing sports. One thing many people don’t take into consideration is the damage that can be sustained from the sun. If you participate in any outdoor activities during the day, you should find shatterproof sunglasses that can block out UVA and UVB sun rays. These can go a long way in preventing cataracts and ocular surface cancer, and will help make it easier for you to play your game. Again, we can help!
