September is Healthy Aging Month, and Cargo Eye Care is here to ensure you have healthy vision for years to come.

Eye Exams at Cargo Eye Care

An annual eye exam is recommended for those 60 and older. Why? Because our technology can detect early signs of eye diseases or conditions. It is crucial to catch these before symptoms arise because the earlier they are caught, the quicker we can treat them.

Adults with certain risk factors should have eye exams more frequently.

Vision-related risk factors for adults include:

  • Diabetes or high blood pressure
  • A family history of eye disease (macular degeneration, glaucoma)
  • Previous eye injuries or eye surgery
  • A visually demanding occupation or one that may pose hazards to the eyes

You might be wondering what an eye exam at Cargo Eye Care consists of. We do so much more than determine your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. Your appointment will be personalized to your needs, and we will check for any eye diseases and assess how your eyes work together and even evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health.

Age-Related Vision Conditions

So, what conditions should you be on the lookout for?

AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD)

AMD is a leading cause of blindness in the United States today, affecting millions of people each year. With AMD, the central portion of the retina (called the macula) deteriorates. This deterioration affects central vision and negatively impacts everyday activities like driving, reading and recognizing faces.

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

This disease is associated with diabetes, and is another leading cause of blindness in the U.S. With diabetic retinopathy, raised blood sugar levels damage the tiny blood vessels within the eye.

GLAUCOMA

This disease often has no symptoms, especially in its early stages, which is why it is important to schedule an annual eye exam. The condition more often occurs in people over the age of 60 and over 40 if Hispanic or African American. If you get diagnosed with this disease, don’t worry, Dr. Cargo is a glaucoma specialist!

If you think you might have any of these conditions or diseases, our experts would be happy to meet with you and recommend the best treatment options for you.
