June is here, and for most kids, that means summer break, sleeping in, vacations, and plenty of time with friends. Scheduling an eye exam is probably not at the top of their summer to-do list—but it should be on yours.

At Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas, we know that healthy vision plays a critical role in how children learn, develop, and experience the world around them. That’s why Children’s Vision Awareness Month is the perfect opportunity to remind our patients to make eye health a priority before the next school year begins.

Vision Problems in Children Are More Common Than Ever Before

Young children often don’t realize they’re having trouble seeing because they assume everyone sees the same way they do. As a result, vision issues can go unnoticed for years.

Some of the most common vision conditions in children include:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness) – blurry distance vision
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness) – difficulty focusing on nearby objects
  • Astigmatism – blurred vision caused by an irregularly shaped cornea

One condition in particular—myopia—is increasing in young people at an alarming rate.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the percentage of children in the United States diagnosed with myopia has increased from approximately 20% in the 1990s to 36% in 2023. Experts believe the rise is linked to environmental factors such as increased screen time and less time spent outdoors in natural sunlight.

At Cargo Eye Care of Las Colinas, we are proud to offer a dedicated pediatric myopia management program designed to help slow the progression of nearsightedness in children.

With childhood myopia increasing so rapidly, early intervention is more important than ever. Our experienced doctors can recommend customized treatment options based on your child’s vision needs and lifestyle.

Why Pediatric Eye Exams Matter

Healthy vision is essential for learning. Much of what children do in school—from reading and writing to using technology and participating in class—is visual.

Undiagnosed vision problems can contribute to:

  • Difficulty reading or focusing
  • Poor academic performance
  • Eye strain and headaches
  • Developmental delays
  • Symptoms that may resemble ADHD or learning difficulties

For younger children, vision also plays an important role in language and social development. Babies and toddlers rely heavily on visual cues like facial expressions and body language as they grow and learn.

Regular eye exams help ensure your child can see clearly at all distances, focus properly, use both eyes together effectively, and maintain healthy eyes free from disease or developmental concerns.

Summer Is the Perfect Time to Schedule an Eye Exam

Back-to-school season gets busy quickly. Scheduling your child’s eye exam during the summer gives you time to address any vision changes before classes begin.

It also helps ensure your child starts the school year confident, comfortable, and ready to learn.

According to the American Optometric Association, children should have eye exams:

  • At 6 months old
  • Again at age 3
  • Before starting school
  • Every two years afterward, if no risk factors are present

Children with certain risk factors—such as premature birth, developmental delays, or a family history of eye disease—may need more frequent exams.
